A tough day in the saddle

Day 3: Victorville to 29 Palms; 91 miles

Another long day in the heat and wind. It is amazing why a constant wind does to your upper body on a bicycle. Seems no matter which direction we ride (primarily due east) the wind is in our face. We started out at 7:10 this morning to take advantage of the lower morning temps; by 11 am it was in the 90's and the road temp over 100. The high today in 29 Palms was 98. Sounds like Florida without the humidity; the dry wind and heat dries the perspiration almost immediately.

Two more flats today; neither of them on my bike.

The 29 Palms Inn dates back to 1928; apparently many famous Hollywood celebs from the 40's stayed here on their trips to Las Vegas. The place is quaint, but definitely old, very rustic almost minimalist. Food was good.

Tomorrow is our last day in the California desert as we make our way to Parker Arizona on a 111 miles journey through the southern Mojave Desert.

hhhmmm. Interesting looking lodging in 29 Palms. I've never been there but when I was in Oakland, CA at the Naval Hosp we used to get patients from the Naval Air Station there. Sounds like you are getting some of the harder miles out of the way earlier. Wonder what is worse: flat land in the heat or hills in nice weather. Guess you will find out!
Ride on......Rick

Sounds brutal - a long day in the desert. What are they providing for you at your feed stations & dinner? Nutrition in those elements must be so different than the humidity at home. How are you feeling now that you've done some consecutive heavy mileage in such hot weather? Congrats on completing your first state today (we'll read about it tomorrow, I'm hoping!)
