A rainy day in Oklahoma

The rain started before I woke up today and didn't stop until i rode 46 miles to Pawhuska, OK for lunch. What a miserable morning! Our group was with one less rider today as Greg, one of the Colorado trio is sick with a fever and the chills. This would not be a good day fro him to be riding. It wasn't a good day fro most of us. Nine flat tires today spread over four riders; I was spared by two of the guys in my group had six flats! This made for a lot of start and stopping which is not good for the muscles, especially in the rain. The only thing the rain was good for was it took the focus off of the wind. At times the wind blew the rain sideways but overall it was not the factor it was the past 3 days.

I wore all of my rain-proof gear today including my Gore Tex jacket, pants, and socks. They worked however i was very warm and sweaty. At lunch i changed into dry clothes as the skies started to clear. Once the rain stopped the riding started to become enjoyable.

I saw my first tarantula today as it crossed the road we were riding; it was at least six inches across. We also came across the first dogs eager to chase us.

Dinner was at the Golden Corral tonight. Yum! Not one of the better dining spots we had.

Today's stats:
4:54 riding time; 73 miles
2,605 kcals burned.
9 flat tires.

No photos today - too much rain! Besides it the same old Oklahoma!

Hi Mark! Into every life (read "bike ride") a little rain must fall.... You need the miserable days to make the typical days look good and the great days shine. Hopefully, the next few days will be great. Sorry to hear about Gregg. Have him try the Zycam (an over the counter spray) if he can pick some up. It seems to really shorten the symptoms of a cold. Also, lots of fluids, some aspirin or tylenol, and rest (the last is a little tough on a cross country bike trip). Cool about the tarantula. I had one as a pet back in middle school, "Herbie". They're harmless by the way. You'd think a town with a Golden Corral would something a little better, even a "Mom and Pop" establishment. At least it's a trough (all you can eat). I don't like those places because I hate to see all the obese people pigging out. They probably lost money on your group. Sounds like you packed well. Hope today is blessed with good weather.
Ride on........
Rick

PS- Question: What wine goes with a buffet? My guess is either Boone's Farm, Ripple, or Thunderbird.
